Overview
Engineering IDS provided comprehensive engineering support and model testing services for a specialized vessel modification project. The work included Owner engineering, structural design, and testing to ensure safe and efficient operations of advanced research and operational equipment.
We highly appreciate and enjoy working with the project, the site team and in particular the project manager George Gill, a tremendous innovative and skilled engineer, who has been a mentor, teaching us about all aspects within shipping and yachting industry.
Scope of Work
Owner Engineering:
Conceptual and detail design of hull modifications
Weight follow-up and independent third-party analysis
Design of secondary structures and sea fastening solutions
Design of zip line for transportation between the decks
Development of lifting appliances for submarines
Design of transport arrangements for research equipment and containers in the hangar
Stability analyses and loading conditions
Hydrodynamic analyses including air gap and sea state operations for operation from hangar with open hatches, operational sea state analyses from the ship aft bathing platform
Viewing Platform Design:
Establish design pressure on the viewing platform using advanced CFD analysis
Lift Analysis of a Triton Submarine in Moonpool:
Detailed lift analysis to ensure safe operations within the moonpool under varying environmental conditions. Hydrodynamic analyses, stability and statistical analyses including the moonpool effect
Model Testing and hydrodynamic analyses:
Specification and execution model tests of the ship with and without use of stabilators
Follow-up and post-processing of test results
Motion response, resistance, and DP analyses
Technical expert witness
Acted as Expert witness for the tribunal
Methodology
The project followed a systematic approach:
Structural Design:
Designed secondary structures, sea fastenings, and transport solutions tailored to the vessel’s operational requirements.
Advanced Model Testing:
Developed detailed test specifications and executed model tests to verify hydrodynamic and structural performance.
CFD Analysis:
Conducted detailed hydrodynamic simulations for a viewing platform and wave breaker, focusing on performance and vessel integration.
Moonpool Lift Analysis:
Performed lift analyses for a submarine using dynamic simulations to assess wave impacts and operational constraints in the moonpool.
Independent Analysis:
Conducted third-party reviews and ensured compliance with industry standards.
